Dad lay very still, listening carefully.\u00a0 Finally he whispered, \u201cJust someone target shooting.\u201d \u00a0 His son Carl, heart knocking fast, peered at the thorny bushes, the gnarled trees, the wild brown grasses, the rocks.\u00a0 He watched them, they watched him.\u00a0 Suspicious.\u00a0 His eye was caught by a nearby movement in the grass.\u00a0 Something small.\u00a0 Very small.\u00a0 A tiny, bone-colored lizard with a head like a triceratops blinked at him.<\/p>\n

Nearby a dove began to coo.<\/p>\n

The tension was broken, but all of the family stayed down.\u00a0 This was one weird place.\u00a0 And Carl knew:\u00a0 a cloud of trouble had surrounded him.<\/p>\n
