Shooting Stars<\/span><\/p>\n

We sold our milk cow.\u00a0 Lily, our Jersey Lily, our milk cow.\u00a0 We left her and Bossie and Carmen at the auction house last week.\u00a0 When we unloaded her, Lily looked pretty.\u00a0 Her coat had a good sheen; she stood tall and erect.\u00a0 When my husband said, \u201cGood-bye, Lily,\u201d an auction employee looked at him funny.\u00a0 My husband replied, \u201cWell, there was not a lot of love between me and Lily.\u00a0 But when you milk a cow twice a day, for a while, you get attached.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Lily looked at him one last time: head high, a last glance of derring do, of pride, of rebellion . . .<\/p>\n

When Cultures Touch<\/span><\/p>\n

Tutoring is supposed to be about teaching someone else.\u00a0 But as a tutor of college English, I have been the one to learn about love and boredom, the innocence of dirty words, and the death of dogs.\u00a0 A Korean student comes to my office everyday.\u00a0 Fern and I have struggled through The Monkey Wrench Gang<\/em> . . .<\/p>\n

Trials and Tribulations<\/span><\/p>\n

As I rolled out the dough for a piecrust, I noticed two neighbors coming down our drive, frowning at the flower garden.\u00a0 The men gesticulated and scolded.\u00a0 Then they lowered their zippers and urinated, right on the calendulas.<\/p>\n

After five years of organic farm life, I knew the biggest challenge was not the hard work, but the uncontrollable variables\u2014the animals, the weather, and the neighbors.\u00a0 The neighbors disapproved . . .<\/p>\n
